Hannibal
Certificate: Anthony Hopkins, Julianne Moore, Gary Oldman, Ray Liotta
Length: 120 minutes Director: Ridley Scott
Rating: After escaping from his asylum, Dr Hannibal Lecter (Hopkins) flees to Florence where he blends into society. However his cover is threatened as one of his former victims Mason Verger (Oldman), who was horrifically tormented by Hannibal, tries to find him for revenge. Also in hot pursuit is FBI agent Clarice Starling (Moore).

The first half of this intense crime thriller builds on the familiar background of the serial killer Dr. Hannibal Lector and special FBI agent Clarice Starling leading to some predictable situations in the plot, but the second half of the film contains an erratic series of events that shed new light on the two main characters as they face extreme situations.

Clarice (Moore) remains an extremely admirable heroine who must survive in a world where she is the target of unfounded scrutiny, unsavory environment, and perverted males that garner no sympathy from the audience. Hannibal initiates the roles of all protagonists and smaller antagonists when he decides to again engage in the insidious crimes that made him such a legend in the crime world.

Every element and piece of dialogue presented takes the audience to some satisfying conclusion, plus there are a few amusing and ironic sidebars that ease the tension for the audience throughout the film.

Director Ridley Scott has excellent, focused direction in this film. The sequence where a truck is driving through some trees and a character views them facing up reminded me of a similar sequence Scott used in his previous film Gladiator. Recommended for mature viewers and fans of the thriller genre.

Warning: this film is not for the faint-hearted!
