Most disaster movies follow a set formula: introduce characters, introduce disaster, kill off a few characters, show a few characters surviving. Titanic also follows this formula, except that the disaster plot line is more of a background for most of the film. This movie is really an emotional love story across class divides. Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet star as the lovers who have to both fight off Kate's fiancee, and try to survive the most famous disaster in history.
An excellent script makes this film stand out as the only disaster movie I've seen that I could describe as truly remarkable. Add to that astounding (and expensive) special effects, brilliant performances and great direction, its easy to see how this has become the most successful movie ever made. You won't see a better movie this year.
